SPRING CLEAN-UP

Thompson Township Residents must go into Zellar Sanitation office Before pulling onto scale.  You are requested to park in the parking lot.  Do Not Park in front of or on the scale.

  1. You must go into the Zellar Sanitation Office and present your Michigan Driver’s License and your Fire Number.
  2. You must legibly sign and print your Name and Phone Number on the slip you are allowed 400 pounds per primary household, anything over will be your responsibility to pay at time of dumping.

Items accepted include: Household waste, remodeling waste, lumber and carpeting.

Items not accepted include: Hazardous materials, roofing, tires, household appliances, electronics, TV, mattresses/box springs yard waste and brush.

You are asked to please take your metal to: Turek’s Used Cars on Little Harbor Road. They will accept all metals, household appliances, Refrigerators & Freezers with a sticker at no charge.

 Note: Individuals who dump more than 400# will need to pay excess weight at time of dumping.

Thompson Township is located in the western quarter of Schoolcraft County in Michigan. The 157 square mile (98,125 acres) township is comprised of private, state and federal land with approximately 20 miles of shoreline along the northern edge of Lake Michigan in the central Upper Peninsula. The current taxable value is $35,434,535, current millage rate is .9244 and there are approximately 1786 parcels of land. The present permanent resident population is 671, up 44.6 percent from the 1990 census figure of 464. There is a sizeable seasonal population increase during the summer and fall months. Thompson Township has had a large building growth in the past two years.

Two-thirds of the township property is classified as non-homestead as much of the property is comprised of forest land. Commercial, state, and federal forest land account for 57,504 acres or 58.9 percent of the total area. There is an additional 11,474 acres of commercial forest land. Along with the Lake Michigan shoreline, the township borders Indian Lake, which is the fourth largest in the state. Thompson Township has a small commercial area along the US-2 corridor, which includes two motels, a convenience/gas station store, a real estate office, church, and a variety store/lumber yard. There are two state campgrounds, a state owned and operated fish hatchery, a golf course, and Michigan’s largest spring, Kitch-iti-ki-pi.
